If there’s one species of fish you want to happe

If there’s one species of fish you want to happen upon when holding a camera in the Maldives (and pretty much everywhere they exist) it’s the Bluestripe snapper.

These charismatic schools of fish don’t just hover in an all-encompassing fog around you, they also pose in formation. How’s that for always ready to show your best face?

Before I did this dive I didn’t get the draw. Five minutes in and I had tears in my eyes. I was 100% sold. It was so beautiful, majestic and real. Over twenty mantas, most larger than me, skimmed over our heads and our upward-pointing lights to feed on the zooplankton that gathered for their own feast.

Since that very first time I’ve done it twice. Once more out of Kona, and once in the Maldives. It never gets old, especially when you see the joy the mantas take in flipping, whirling and flying.

If there’s anything better than the interactions we can have with animals in this world I’m not sure I can name it.

Good news is if you’re not a diver you can still snorkel above this campfire. The mantas are right below! You’ll get a wholly different perspective than I did.

If you like beaches, the resort life, wall diving

If you like beaches, the resort life, wall diving and good food, Turks and Caicos is the place for you.

Small though the island of Providenciales may feel — there’s really just the one main road to take you from one side to the other — there are still plenty of activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Kayak, dive, kiteboard, parasail and snorkel to your hearts content.

Personally I loved the wall diving and the veggie options (and cocktails) at @omarsbeachhut. Also the local hot sauce…to die for. Came back with 4 bottles of it!

Highly recommend:
• Stay in a resort or hotel near the downtown area.
• Dive with @diveprovo — two tank day dives.
• Check out the Conch Shack for good atmosphere.
• Ride horses on the beach.
• Get a flight at @turksheadbrewery (the beer is good)
• Try the falafel at @turkskebabtc
• Snorkel at Smiths Reef or take your tankless diving system (like @diveblu3 ) and “dive” the reef everybody else is snorkeling!
• Visit Middle Caicos via ferry and check out Mudjin Harbor. If you’re going to the caves there take mosquito spray.

A few notes: I stayed in Blue Hills in an Airbnb. While it was an authentic experience I was far from town and the dive boat launch area. Staying in a resort or a hotel closer to downtown might have made eating out a little easier and might have made access to a few activities easier too.

Also a note on the caves on Middle Caicos: Even though the caves said they’d be open and I called to check, when I went they weren’t. It’s a long drive for a let down like that. A shame as I’d have liked to see them. Still, Indian Caves on Middle Caicos is free. Also go get a frozen cocktail at @dragoncayresort and sit outside to look over the most beautiful beach. Far more beautiful than Grace Bay IMO!!

If I go back this time I’ll try stay on the even tinier island of Grand Turk. Why? Whales and apparently good nightlife.

What does a blackwater dive on the Island of Hawai

What does a blackwater dive on the Island of Hawai’i look like?

Last year, on assignment for @scubadivingmag , I headed out to answer this very question.

Did the thought of hovering off a drifting boat on a tether over 5,000+ feet of pitch black ocean terrify me? Yes. But it was also one of the most rewarding and different dives I have ever done. So much so that I did it twice.

If you love throwing yourself into the deep end (albeit safely), this is a must-do.

This is a Maldive anemonefish (I know, creative na

This is a Maldive anemonefish (I know, creative name), thusly named because well it’s found in the Maldives and Sri Lanka. In this case it’s residing in another aptly named shelter: the Magnificent sea anemone, aptly named because, well, it stops a diver in its tracks! There was not a purple anemone I did not photograph in the Maldives.

Some underwater photographers focus on the sharks while others of us have to get dragged away from the anemone fish 😆

Frankly I can’t get enough of these fishies because they’re so aware of my presence, poking in and out of the anemone to watch me lest I even think about stealing their cozy lil apartment. My favorite thing is stumbling upon a reef packed with anemones, each with its only single fish or family unit of fish…just freaking adorable.

But if you think it’s a traditional family, you’d be wrong! It’s a modern family 😊 with males living in harems and aggressively defending their anemone townhouses. It’s also worth noting that Maldive anemonefish are born as males and can later change sex (upgrade 😉) to female. Now that’s choice!
